Help with the iOS app and your Lumora sensor

Need a hand? Email contact@lumorasystems.com.au and a human on the Lumora team will get back to you. Tell us your iOS version, your sensor model, and what you were doing when things went wrong — it gets us to an answer much faster.

Getting started

Connecting your sensor

Power on your Lumora sensor and open the app. On the Scan tab, tap Connect Device. The app scans for nearby Lumora hardware over Bluetooth and connects automatically once it finds your unit.

If the app can't find your sensor:

  • Check the sensor is powered on and its battery isn't flat.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Confirm Lumora has Bluetooth permission in iOS Settings → Lumora.
  • Check the product selected in the app matches the hardware you're holding — tap the product chip on the Scan screen to change it.
  • Move the sensor closer, and away from other Bluetooth devices.

Building a calibration

Before the app can report cell density, it needs a calibration for your species and culture type. A calibration relates the sensor's fluorescence signal to a known dilution series, so the app can turn a raw reading into cells per microlitre.

With your sensor connected, tap New Calibration, choose the species and culture type, and measure each step of your dilution series when prompted. The app fits a curve across the series and saves it. You can build as many calibrations as you need and switch between them.

You can also take a reading without a calibration — tap Scan Without Calibration. You'll get raw F₀, Fm, and Fv/Fm values, with no cell-density conversion and no batch assignment.

Sharing a calibration

Calibrations export as .lumoracal files. Share one with a colleague by AirDrop, Messages, email, or Files — when they open it, it's added to their app. This is handy when a team is working from a single reference dilution series.

Batches

Readings taken against the same calibration are grouped into a batch, so you can watch density change over time. Open the Batches tab to see the time-versus-density chart for a culture.

Environmental context

If you allow it, the app tags each reading with location, weather, atmospheric pressure, ambient light, and compass heading — the context that makes a field measurement interpretable months later.

All of this is optional. Grant or revoke Location and Motion & Fitness access in iOS Settings → Lumora at any time. The app works fine without them; you just get a reading without the surrounding context.

Your data

Everything the app records stays on your device. There's no account, and nothing is uploaded to Lumora. You can delete a single reading from its detail view, or delete all readings from the Profile screen. See the privacy policy for the full picture.

Requirements

  • iPhone or iPad running iOS 18.6 or later.
  • Bluetooth enabled.
  • A Lumora sensor, for taking measurements.

Common questions

Can I use the app without a sensor?

You can install and explore it, but measurements require Lumora hardware. If you'd like to see what the app does before your unit arrives, email us and we'll walk you through it.

My Fv/Fm values look wrong.

Fv/Fm is sensitive to sample handling. Check that your sample is properly dark-adapted before measuring, that the sensor window is clean, and that the sensor is seated consistently against the sample. If values still look off, get in touch with an example reading and we'll help you diagnose it.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?
